Eileen Saki, the Japanese-American actress, has passed away at the age of 86 years old, due to complications resulting from lung cancer. Her husband, Bob Borgen, confirmed the news of her death on Monday. She is best known for playing the role of Rosie in the popular TV show “M*A*S*H,” a role that she played in the series for a total of nine episodes over several seasons.
Often appearing in supporting roles in both film and television, Saki had a prolific acting career that spanned more than three decades. However, it was her role as Rosie, the bar owner of the watering hole for the US military personnel, where she found her claim to fame.
According to Jeff Maxwell, her co-star on “M*A*S*H,” Saki was a gracious, funny, and engaging actress whose passion for her craft was evident in everything she did. Maxwell paid tribute to Saki on his Facebook page, saying, “Our sweet Eileen has left us. She was a lovely actor, a great mom, and a wonderful friend.”
Born in Japan, Saki came to the US with her family when she was a young child and began her acting career in the 1960s. However, her stage debut came at the age of sixteen, when she performed a monologue from “A Streetcar Named Desire” in a high school drama contest in California.
Saki’s acting career took off after she snuck onto the lot where “M*A*S*H” was being filmed, and met with the show’s producer, Burt Metcalf. After impressing him with her comedic timing and acting ability, Saki was cast as the new Rosie.
After “M*A*S*H,” Saki appeared in popular films such as “Splash” and “History of the World, Part I,” as well as TV shows such as “CHiPs,” “Gimme A Break!,” and “Without A Trace.” She also appeared in television commercials, including a recent ad for Uber Eats.
Saki was known for her warmth and generosity, and was a beloved member of the “M*A*S*H” cast. She will be remembered for her grace, skill, and talent, and for her contribution to the world of entertainment.
