Carrie Fisher, the late actress known for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, is set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The honour will be presented posthumously on May 4th, a date celebrated by Star Wars fans worldwide as “May the Fourth” due to the franchise’s iconic phrase, “may the Force be with you.”
Fisher passed away in December 2016, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable performances on screen. She starred in the original Star Wars trilogy, as well as subsequently released sequels, and also appeared in a number of other interconnected Hollywood hits, such as When Harry Met Sally and The Blues Brothers. Fisher secured her position as a cultural icon with her notable portrayal of the strong and independent Princess Leia, who became a cornerstone of the Star Wars franchise.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that the unveiling of Fisher’s star will take place on Hollywood Boulevard near where the first Star Wars movie premiered in 1977. Her Star Wars co-stars Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill are also located on the same block of Hollywood Boulevard. The induction ceremony will be livestreamed by the chamber of commerce.
Fans of the actress and the Star Wars franchise have long advocated for Fisher to receive the honour. The Walk of Fame induction requires a fee of $75,000 for the creation and maintenance of the star. Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, will accept the award on her behalf. Fisher’s family has been vocal about their support for the recognition and the importance of this special day.
However, Fisher’s brother and sisters were not invited to attend the ceremony, causing controversy online. Lourd explained that she did not invite them due to actions they took after Fisher’s death and that she is focused on honouring her mother’s legacy on this special day.
Fisher’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star will be the 2,754th to be unveiled on the pathway, which honours celebrities in the entertainment industry. The star will ensure that her influence on the multi-billion dollar Star Wars franchise and Hollywood as a whole will be forever commemorated.
