Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has introduced articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden, accusing him of failing to secure the US borders and compromising national security. In a press conference on Thursday, Greene accused Biden of allowing millions of illegal immigrants from over 170 countries into the country and of not providing adequate resources and policies to Customs and Border Protection agents to perform their duties. She also claimed that the President allowed fentanyl to flood into the country and accused him of purposefully failing to fulfil his responsibilities as President. The charges against Biden are just the first round of potential offences, according to Greene, who has also introduced impeachment articles against Attorney General Merrick Garland, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves.

Greene’s accusations against Biden come as the US faces a surge in migrants attempting to enter the country. The number of unaccompanied minors attempting to enter the country has reached record levels, putting pressure on the administration to address the crisis at the southern border. The Congresswoman’s accusations, however, have been labelled a “stunt” by the White House and are unlikely to succeed as Republicans hold only a nine-seat majority and no Democratic support is expected. The White House noted that Biden is currently focused on preventing the House Republicans’ eventual default that could crash the economy, as the deadline for a suspension of the ceiling on the national debt looms large.

Greene, who has previously promoted conspiracy theories, has called the President a “direct threat to our social fabric” and claimed that he has violated his oath of office by not upholding the US Constitution and protecting American citizens. The Georgia lawmaker’s latest move to impeach Biden was also announced during what she calls “impeachment week” which saw her introduce articles of impeachment against FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland for their handling of the investigation into the January 6th Capitol attack.

The introduction of articles of impeachment against the President highlights the deep divide among lawmakers over the handling of immigration and border control. The number of individuals crossing the border illegally has surged since Biden took office, with over 211,000 migrant encounters reported by the Customs and Border Protection agency in April alone. While the Biden administration has tried to address the issue by increasing capacity at border facilities and expediting processing, it has faced criticism from Republicans for not being tough enough on border security.

The impeachment charges against the President, however, are unlikely to succeed unless there is significant support from Democrats. As President Biden marks his first year in office in January 2022, it remains to be seen how his administration will respond to the ongoing crisis at the southern border and how it will work to bridge the gap between Republicans and Democrats on the issue of immigration.
