Popular children’s bunk beds made by Walker Edison Furniture and sold through various retailers including Walmart, Home Depot and Amazon have been recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall affects products sold from February 2010 until February 2022, with over 1 million units sold. The recall was issued due to 14 incidents reported by Walker Edison Furniture, which included at least one report of injury. The wooden slats in the support frame of the beds are at risk of breaking while in use, posing safety risks for anyone sleeping on them. All models of the Ver-Twin bunk beds are affected, which are identified by a ladder down the side and a label on the inside of the bed rail or footboard.

Consumers are being advised to discontinue any use of the recalled beds immediately, and to contact Walker Edison Furniture for a free repair kit, including approximately 12 wooden slats and instructions. Customers who have purchased the affected product are being urged to check the model name associated with their purchase, which can be found on the CPSC website. All customers are entitled to a full refund with free pickup.

Walker Edison Furniture has taken responsibility for the recall and is offering affected customers a means to quickly and efficiently address any issues with their beds. The company has urged these customers to contact it by phone, email, or through its website to arrange for the free repair kit. Although most of the incidents involved the support frame’s wooden slats breaking, at least one incident was the result of a minor injury. The seriousness of these safety risks makes it crucial for affected customers to reach out to the company and cease using the products as soon as possible.

The recall serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of checking for recall notices, particularly for children’s products. Parents and guardians are urged to regularly check for recalls on such products or to sign up for email alerts offered by the CPSC to stay informed of safety concerns. Acting on these alerts and taking advantage of manufacturers’ recall remedies can help reduce injury risk, especially for children who are particularly vulnerable to accidents and injuries. Given the popularity of Walker Edison Furniture’s bunk beds, the recall serves as a warning for all parents to be vigilant and proactive in checking products for safety issues. Overall, this recall highlights the importance of prompt and thorough attention to safety risks by manufacturers, retailers, and regulators to help prevent injuries and other negative outcomes associated with product use.
