Prince Charles was officially crowned the king of the United Kingdom in a scaled-down version of the traditional coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The event, which was expected to showcase heritage and spectacle, lost some of its awe and reverence as anti-monarchy protesters gathered outside to holler “Not my king.” The ceremony included elements from a range of faiths, with female bishops present for the first time. Those of Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh faiths were also given roles in the ceremony, while music was sung in Welsh, Scottish, and Irish Gaelic. Female clergy were involved for the first time too.

The two-hour service was intended to be inclusive and reflective of the country’s diversity. The coronation oath was tweaked to include fostering an environment in which people of all faiths and beliefs may live freely. The new king has pledged to set the tone for his reign by ensuring that the ceremony reflected the whole of the UK and was representative of many backgrounds and faiths.

The coronation dates back to the medieval period, and much of it remains unchanged, with the monarch presented with the St Edward’s Crown and other sacred objects symbolizing their power and responsibilities. King Charles III was presented with the St Edward’s Crown, which weighs five pounds and is filled with gems, including sapphires, rubies, garnets, amethysts, topazes, and tourmalines. He wore a gold coronet, while Queen Camilla was bestowed with Queen Mary’s crown for her investiture.

There were major differences in the coronation ceremony compared to that for the King’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953. One aspect was the duration of the service, which was shorter than the three-hour ceremony for Elizabeth, reflecting King Charles III’s efforts to ensure that the monarchy remains relevant to a much more diverse country.

The heir to the British throne automatically became king in September 2022. While the new king has no executive or political power, he faces a challenge in keeping the monarchy relevant in a time when support for it is on the decline. In contrast to the fanfare inside Westminster Abbey, outside, anti-monarchy protesters staged a rally, saying that the monarchy stood for privilege and inequality in a time of deepening poverty and fraying social ties.

Despite the sentiments echoed by anti-monarchy groups, the 2,200 people in attendance that day, including heads of state, celebrities, and faith leaders, witnessed history. The King’s ascension to the throne was historic, as he became the oldest heir to be crowned monarch, having waited almost his entire life for this moment.

King Charles III’s ascension marks a turning point in the history of the British monarchy. Though some may view the coronation ceremony as a display of privilege in a time of unprecedented social and economic challenges, the new King’s inclusive approach offers hope that the institution can adapt and remain relevant to a changing society. While the outdoor protests highlight opposition to the monarchy, it is clear that the country’s relationship with the monarchy remains complex and will continue to inspire debate for years to come.
